Musical alphabet & Notes on the fretboard

It is so important to learn the notes you are playing! The ability to name and find notes anywhere on the guitar is essential in developing as a player. This series is designed to get you doing exactly that.

The first step... You have to learn the notes and the order they follow. Pay close attention to which notes don't have gaps between them.

There are only 12 notes in all of music! That's not alot but it will take some time to learn and feel confident with.

Now you can work out the natural notes along each string, it's time to add the sharp and flat notes.

Remember - On the guitar these are 1 note, but they have two different names! You can call them either but In the video I use the sharp names.

Applying The Pattern To The Guitar

You should now be happy that you can recall the pattern of notes and the spaces between. Now it's time to put this into action.

The goal here is to be able to figure out the notes, string by string, playing from the open string finishing at the 12th fret. Don't move on until you can do this confidently!

The Test

By this point you should know the pattern of the musical alphabet from memory and be able to apply it to guitar naming notes up and down all six strings. Now for the tests.....Play the notes along with me and write down your 10 answers.

The correct answers are shown in the 2nd half of this video.
